Wyclef became hip-hop's unofficial multicultural conscience; a
seemingly omnipresent activist, he assembled or participated in
numerous high-profile charity benefit shows for a variety of
causes, including aid for his native Haiti. The utopian one-world
sensibility that fueled Wyclef's political consciousness also
informed his recordings, which fused hip-hop with as many different
styles of music as he could get his hands on (though, given his
Caribbean roots, reggae was a particular favorite). In addition to
his niche as hip-hop's foremost global citizen, Clef was also a
noted producer and remixer who worked with an impressive array of
pop, R&B, and hip-hop talent, including Whitney Houston,
Santana, and Destiny's Child, among many others.
Wyclef returns with a mixtape featuring all new material. The
release returns Wyclef to his roots and is a far more street record
than his recent efforts.
Different side of Wyclef......booooringReviewed by Mi-tey, 2010-02-06
This album attemps to portray a different side of Wyclef. From what
I gather he is trying to show he is a hardcore rapper that came
from the ghetto, etc, etc, etc. This CD does not feature the
multi-talented, guitar playin, singing, rapping, political, funny,
Wyclef songs that make him cool to lots of people.
If you want to here Wyclef rhyme tough over monotanous beats about
how he went rags to riches, is a warrior, etc, etc,....then this
album is for you.
I have The Score, both carnivals, the eclectic, and some other clef
stuff and love it all, yet I can't really manage to get through
these boring songs without skipping to the next.
I bought this and the new Wayne CD and they both pretty much stink!
Maybe they'll grow on me.
Love it!Reviewed by M. D. Thomatz, 2010-01-25
I hope my review ups the average rating for thie album. Great lyrics, cool beats, very listenable, yet I think will have staying power. I'm a newbie to Wyclef's music (except for songs here and there) but I love this CD. Fun and funky, Wyclef kills it. And love Cyndi lauper's contribution- unexcpectedly cool!
real hip hopReviewed by Devin Turner, 2010-01-12
Clef is at his best. The music and lyrics are great. There are a lot of rewindable moments with this LP. It just makes wonder what would the Fugees sound like now. Its worth the buy.
this rags to riches rap has gotten oldReviewed by Paul Pelt, 2009-12-26
what Wyclef does best is play roots music. i've seen him live, he played haitian music, reggae, it was great. The Carnival is still his best work (& John Forte is outta jail if the brothers want to collaborate again) he could be keeping it real but the majority of these songs do nothing for me.
First experience with Wyclef JeanReviewed by SanDiegoDuran, 2009-12-19
I purchased this Album SPECIFICALLY because of Cyndi Lauper who is
featured on and co-wrote 'Slumdog Millionaire'. (Brilliant Song and
EXCELLENT COLLABORATION between these two artisits.)
I tried to be open minded about the rest of this record but what
can I say?...
It wasn't for me. I would have preferred an 'explicit language'
warning.
